Home owners insurance is classified as a package policy, which means it provides coverage both to the damage your property faces and the liability you or your family members may cause to third parties. Any damage caused by household pets is also included in the policy.

Home owners insurance policy provides coverage for most disasters with some exceptions. A typical policy won't cover you in case of an earthquake or a flood and will require you to purchase separate policies for both types of disasters. Any damage caused by poor maintenance of the house is the owner's full responsibility.
